Teens in Fiber
Teens in Fiber – Build the Future is a partnership with Greenlight Community Broadband, Fiber Broadband, WEP, and Wilson County Schools.
This interactive, hands-on program introduces high school juniors and Wilson Academy of Applied Technology (WAAT) seniors to the exciting world of fiber optics and the high-demand careers that power today’s connected world. Hosted at the Greenlight facility, students will step inside a real fiber-optic network operation to see how high-speed internet, telecommunications, and smart technologies rely on fiber-optic infrastructure.
Students will participate in engaging activities, including facility tours, live demonstrations, hands-on fiber optic labs, cable splicing and testing demonstrations, and problem-solving projects. Along the way, they will interact with industry professionals who will share their career journeys, demonstrate cutting-edge technology, and provide insight into the skills needed for success in the telecommunications industry.
By connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences, Teens in Fiber – Build the Future inspires students to explore careers in fiber optics, broadband, information technology, and network operations. The program helps students build confidence, develop critical thinking and teamwork skills, and see themselves as the next generation of innovators who will build and maintain the technology that keeps our communities connected.
