Learners to Leaders
Learners to Leaders is a partnership between Smithfield Foods, WEP, and Wilson County Schools.
This program is offered to seniors in our traditional high schools. Students will engage in a hands-on learning experience that connects classroom concepts to real-world operations. Students will learn about several stages of the production process, gaining insight into equipment functionality, quality control procedures, and the importance of efficiency in food manufacturing. They will participate in activities that show the importance of safety procedures and how they align with industry standards to maintain a healthy work environment.
Students will take part in interactive problem-solving activities that encourage teamwork, critical thinking, and practical application. They will connect with plant leadership to build relationships and receive tips on interviewing, soft skills, and resume writing. Together, these elements create a dynamic program that educates, inspires, and prepares students for future careers in the food industry. Students interested in learning more about employment upon graduation will be excellent candidates for this program.
Students from Food and Nutrition classes will be selected to receive the following program benefits:
- Fall – On-site at the Smithfield Foods Plant for safety PEP demonstration & participation
- Spring – Off-site to work on problem-solving and interview soft skills
- Mentorship from leadership with networking opportunities
- Hands-on activities that include team building, problem solving and critical thinking
